Make a Lasting Impact in Your Community

Serving on a Youth Assistance Program (YAP) Board of Directors is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people and families in your community. Each YAP Board brings together local leaders and passionate advocates dedicated to the program’s mission of supporting youth and families facing challenging life circumstances. Board members are essential to the success and growth of our programs, and we invite committed individuals to join us in this impactful role.

Why Serve on a Youth Assistance Program Board?

As a board member, you’ll play a critical role in guiding the organization, advocating for youth, and helping to secure resources that make our services possible. Your service helps to:

  • Strengthen community ties and raise awareness of our mission and values.
  • Ensure that the organization remains responsive to the needs and interests of youth and families.
  • Provide strategic guidance to maintain program quality and expand our reach.
  • Support fundraising initiatives and participate in key events that drive financial sustainability.

Board members represent the voice of the community, helping bridge the gap between local needs and the resources necessary to address them. Serving on a YAP Board is a powerful way to give back, engage with your community, and create a legacy of positive change.

Responsibilities of a Youth Assistance Program Board Member

Below is a sample of responsibilities from the Westfield Youth Assistance Program’s Board Member Participation Agreement. While responsibilities may vary by location, each YAP Board member commits to:

Share the program’s work and values within the community and serve as a spokesperson for its goals.

Reflect community needs back to the organization and hold the program accountable to those it serves.

Attend a minimum of 6 out of 8 general board meetings and, if applicable, participate in executive meetings. Board members also attend an annual retreat to strategize and plan for the future.

Make a meaningful annual financial contribution and participate in at least one fundraising activity to help sustain program efforts.

Join in on key events, committee meetings, and fundraising initiatives that strengthen the program and build community support.

Support our Early Intervention Advocates (EIAs) by assisting with interviews, phone calls, or other outreach tasks as needed.

Act responsibly in decision-making, avoiding conflicts of interest and staying informed about the organization’s activities.

Work collaboratively with staff and other board members to achieve shared goals, making every effort to attend public elections and fulfill your board term commitment (typically three years, with an option for renewal).
